Drooping of the corners of the mouth can be concerning for our patients as it creates a false appearance that you can look sad or down constantly.
One of the reasons for the downturned corners of the mouth can be caused by the downward pulling muscle called the Depressor Anguli Oris (DAO). This muscle is attached at the edge of the lip which is used in the expression of frowning, helping to pull down the edges of the lips.
This overactivity of this muscle acts to depress the corners of the mouth. To help reduce this, we can inject a small amount of protein, to help create a more elevated response as an opposite of the downward pull of the DAO.
If not treated, the repeated activity of the DAO can lead to marionette lines due to the skin issue constantly being pulled down with the overuse of the muscle.
